Recycled food bag project

Over the last 4 years En Shalla have worked on a project embroidering recycled food bags in and outside Marrakech, Morocco.

Design inspired by artist, Josef Albers' work from 1967.

They work with recycled plastic bags that would have originally been used to carry industrial quantities of rice, couscous, flour and other commodity foods.

The bags are hand embroidered weaving different materials through the plastic grid like squares on the outside of the sacs.  Due to the nature of the design and the way it is constructed it enables us to reproduce different patterns in a pixel like format on a blank canvas each season.

We tend to turn the bag inside out so the original design is still on the inside of the bag. This lets the client know what the bag’s original use was and adds a sense of romance to the story.

We work with women groups in and around Marrakech

The first initial design for each bag is made in our own factory where we have a group of artisans who work for us. We then take the bag to villages outside the city where we reproduce the design.

Women in rural areas outside Marrakech are sometimes not able to work due to the social environment they live in and one of the beautiful things about this project is we are able to take it to them.

By doing this we are enabling these ladies to do something they like and earn an income.

This firstly gives them a sense of achievement, makes them feel good about themselves and also puts a little money in their pockets.

Women living here generally grow up sewing and using their hands in a creative way and with our food bag project we will be able to put this in the spotlight and show the world how wonderfully skilled they are.

En Shalla Food Bag project charity

We have now decided to form a charity in Morocco where we will concentrate on educating people in and around these villages in Marrakech.

We want to help people to learn to read and write, as these are fundamental aspects of human life that everybody should be given the opportunity to have. We will start doing this by using part of the profits from our Food bag project to send a tutor to different villages, buying pens and paper  and giving lessons in basic reading and writing skills.

Teachers will travel to villages on food bag branded scooters.

Food bag collective projects

For S/S 2020 we would like to invite 20 designers to design a food bag for a special mosaic collective. This collection will be sold as a group as we would like each bag to represent a part of a mutual energy, yet we would also like the designer to include the bag in their own sales campaign that season and offer the bag to their clients. This way we are building a sustainable network between a like minded group of designers.
